How the pool works
The scoring seems needlessly complicated, but it's battle-tested -- I think this is year 9 we've used some variation of it.
1. For each series, predict a result, eg, "Carolina in 6"
2. If you predict the outcome exactly, you get 7 points for picking the winner and 7 bonus points (representing the maximum 7 games of the series).
3. If you miss the number of games, deduct 1 bonus point for each game you're off.
Example 1: You picked Carolina in 6 and Carolina won in 5. You get 7 points plus 6 points for missing the overall result by a single game.
Example 2: You picked Carolina in 6 and New Jersey won in 5. You get 0 points to start
'cause you missed the winner and you get 7 - 4 = 3 bonus points, essentially for picking the results of 3 games right (2 wins for NJ, 1 for CAR). See diagram at right -- start with your prediction and deduct 1 point for each spot you move to reach the actual result. To prevent the poolies who flub the first round from totally falling out of the running (and thus neglecting to send in picks for subsequent rounds), in the Conference Finals and Cup Finals the point totals double to 14. If you never picked against the team that wins the Cup, that's an additional 14 bonus points.
All comers invited -- tell yer friends. More to come...

1. Boston 4
8. Montreal 0
Boston's strong, Tim Thomas has been a rock, and Montreal only ended up in the playoffs because none of the bubble teams managed to put up a fight for 8th.
2. Washington 4
7. New York 1
The Rangers finished the season with 8 fewer goals scored than against, and the fewest goals for of any team in the playoffs. The goaltending advantage is clearly in their favor but they won't find enough scoring to top the Caps.
3. New Jersey 3
6. Carolina 4
The numbers favor New Jersey, but I'm picking Carolina, who have definitely been en fuego.
4. Pittsburgh 4
5. Philadelphia 3
I hate to do it but I have to give this to Pittsburgh. Goddamn I really hate to do it.
1. San Jose 4
8. Anaheim 2
Giguere took home a Conn-Smythe, but he's been downright abysmal compared to Hiller this year. It'll be an interesting dilemma for Anaheim, but I don't think the Rangers' west coast affiliate will muster enough ganas to get past the Sharks.
2. Detroit 4
7. Columbus 1
Detroit has suffered its share of first-round upsets, and Columbus made a great run to get here, but I'm not betting against the Wings.
3. Vancouver 4
6. St. Louis 1
How the hell did St. Louis get here? I could almost forget I hate 'em, but I don't see them getting past Vancouver.
No idea where my Chicago/Calgary went, and I don't know if I can edit my original post.
4. Chicago 4
5. Calgary 3
Recent playoff experience goes to the Flames, but I think Chicago has this one.

Boston in 5 - Goaltending this year too strong to bet against.
Washington in 7 - Almost took NY in an upset based on goaltending, but Alexander the Great will carry this team on his back, at least through round 1.
NJ in 5 - Brodeur. Nuff said.
Philly in 7 - Only because I'm a homer and there's no money on this.
WEST
San Jose in 5 - Giving Anaheim 1 game because Jiggy will stand on his head at least once.
Detroit in 4 - No brainer.
Vancouver in 6 - They kind of suck for a 3 seed... but Luongo in the playoffs coming off a strong end to the season? Can't bet against that. I still hope Matsy Sundin catches a puck to the face, though.
Calgary in 6 - Kipper + Jokinen = good playoff leadership. I like Chicago, but they're still a bit too young. And I have a feeling Khabibulin blows out his groin early in this series.

This is as excited as I have been about post season hockey in a few years. And with Osgood (over-rated) showing his true colors between the pipes, to me, there are NO clear cut favorites here. It's anybody's cup to win.
With that said.....let the madness begin!
